Editing Nodes

Once you have created nodes in your mind map, you can edit their text at any time. This guide covers all the ways to start editing, confirm or cancel changes, and how nodes resize after editing.

Starting an Edit

There are several ways to begin editing a node’s title:

  • Select the node and press Shift+Enter.
  • Right-click the node and choose Edit Title from the context menu.
  • Select the node and click the pencil icon in the bottom toolbar.
Note

Double-clicking a node opens the details editor (rich notes panel), not the title editor. If the node is linked to another notemap, double-clicking navigates to that linked notemap instead. To edit the title, use Shift+Enter or the context menu.

When editing begins, the node’s text is replaced with an editable text field. The cursor is placed in the field so you can start typing immediately.

Confirming Your Edit

Once you are happy with the text, you can confirm the edit in two ways:

  • Press Enter to save and exit editing mode.
  • Click anywhere outside the node on the canvas.

Both actions save your changes and return the node to its normal display state.

Cancelling an Edit

If you change your mind and want to revert to the original text:

  • Press Escape to cancel the edit.

This discards any changes you made and restores the text to what it was before you started editing.

How Node Sizing Works

When you edit a node, there are two phases to understand:

During Editing

The node keeps its current width while you type. If your text is longer than the node’s width, the text wraps within the available space. The node does not grow or shrink while you are actively typing.

After Editing

Once you confirm the edit (by pressing Enter or clicking outside), the layout engine recalculates positions. The node resizes to fit its new text, and all surrounding nodes adjust their positions accordingly. This keeps the map clean and properly spaced.

Note

The brief moment between confirming your edit and the layout recalculating is nearly instantaneous. You will see the node snap to its new size right away.

Editing from the Toolbar

When a node is selected, the bottom toolbar shows an edit button (pencil icon). Clicking this button puts the selected node into editing mode, just like double-clicking or pressing Shift+Enter.

This is helpful if you prefer using the mouse or want a visual reminder of available actions.

Rich Notes for Longer Content

Node titles are meant to be short and concise — they are the labels you see on the map. If you need to add longer-form content such as detailed descriptions, notes, or supporting information, use Rich Notes (also called node details).

Rich Notes are covered in a later section of the documentation. They give you a full text editor attached to any node, so you can keep your map titles brief while still capturing all the detail you need.

Tip

Keep node titles short and descriptive. A good mind map reads at a glance. Use Rich Notes for any additional detail you want to attach to a node.
