Linking Notemaps

Individual mind maps are powerful on their own, but connecting them together unlocks a whole new level of organization. Notemap lets you create links between different maps in your workspace, turning your collection into an interconnected knowledge base.

A single mind map is great for exploring one topic in depth, but real-world knowledge spans many topics that relate to each other. By linking notemaps, you can:

  • Break large topics into focused maps without losing the connections between them
  • Navigate fluidly between related ideas across different maps
  • Build a personal wiki-like structure that grows with your thinking

Select a node and press Shift+L to open the Link to Notemap dialog. Choose another .notemap file from your workspace to link it to the selected node. The linked notemap becomes accessible directly from that node, creating a navigable connection between the two maps.

You can also right-click a node and choose Link to Notemap from the context menu.

Double-click a node that has a linked notemap to navigate directly to that map. You can move between maps quickly, exploring related topics without needing to go back to the file tree. This makes it easy to follow your train of thought across multiple maps.

Use Cases

Linking notemaps together is useful in many workflows:

  • Project management — Create a high-level project overview map that links to detailed maps for each phase, workstream, or deliverable
  • Research — Maintain a central research map with links to topic-specific deep dives
  • Meeting notes — Link meeting note maps to the relevant project or initiative maps they relate to
  • Learning — Build a curriculum map that links to detailed notes for each subject or chapter
  • Personal knowledge base — Connect ideas, references, and notes across your entire workspace

Building a Hub Map

A powerful pattern is to create a “hub” mind map that serves as your central navigation point. This map contains nodes that link out to all of your key maps, giving you a bird’s-eye view of your entire knowledge base and one-click access to any topic.

For example, a hub map might look like:

My Knowledge Hub
├── Work Projects
│ ├── → Project Alpha.notemap
│ ├── → Project Beta.notemap
│ └── → Q1 Planning.notemap
├── Research
│ ├── → Machine Learning Notes.notemap
│ └── → Industry Trends.notemap
└── Personal
    ├── → Book Notes.notemap
    └── → Goal Tracker.notemap

Links are maintained as long as the referenced files remain within your workspace. If you reorganize your folder structure by moving files into subfolders or renaming directories, Notemap keeps track of the connections as long as the files stay in the workspace.

Note

If you move a linked notemap file out of your workspace entirely, the link will no longer resolve. Keep all your connected maps within the same workspace for reliable navigation.

Tip

Create a master "index" notemap that links to all your key maps for quick navigation. This gives you a single starting point to reach anything in your knowledge base.
